Is planning permission required for a soakaway?
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.54 PM
I'm thinking of installing a soakaway on my garden as we have a sloping driveway and there is nowhere for rainwater to drain away. This method has been suggested but unsure whether Edinburgh Council need to provide permission?

hi
no planning consent as far as i am aware is not needed,it just has to be not within 5m of any property or road, and 2.5m from any boundary.
different types and specs depending on what size the property the stormwater is coming in off,but usually domestic, these quants are about right.

Planning permission is not needed for a soak away as it's a great way to disperse of ground water without over loading the local sewer with excess water. It's a good idea to dig a trial hole and check the type of soil you have so that you can determine how efficient the soak away would be. Sand/gravel would work very well.
