Do I need a steel to support a small chimney (20"x32") after breast is removed?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.42 PM
We are planning to remove the chimney breast (on one side only) on the ground and first floors and was wondering if there is any other way to support the chimney in the loft. The chimney goes up the center of our property. If not, do I need planning permission to take the whole thing out?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi yann1
A structural engineer will tell you which gallows brackets will be needed to support the section of chimney in loft.

you wouldnt need to seek planning permission to drop the chimney ,as for a steel support yes you will need to insert a beam to stableise the structure if there is a bearing, if not you may well consider dropping the whole chimney and make good roof , internal walls and floors .good luck .

First thing you need to do is inform building control, as these works are structural, you will also need a S/E to design the steels.
