I live in a ground floor flat our bedroom has an outside wall that gets very little sunlight ,we noticed a musty smell when we were in bed when i lifted the carpet and underlay the grippers carpet and underlay are black and damp and smell musty if I push my hand further under the carpet towards the middle of the room it feels damp, some of the marley tiles have come up and i noticed that there are a couple of cracks in the screed the wall is dry and has been papered with no evidence of wet or damp when it was removed the problem seems to be the bottom of the wall and floor .any suggestions many thanks, Paul

It will either be a tear in your d.p.c ( damp proof course ) which the water is rising there into the wall . Or it could be that there is no ventilation in the property and that area is the first to start and the dampest place . But if it's an air brick needed for the second analysis the problem will worsen until an air ruck or ventilation is fitted ,
