Laying engineered wood floor over chipboard subfloor

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

We are renovating our kitchen extension (build in 2008) and are looking to lay an engineered wood floor. Previous there was a lino floor that now we have removed we can see the subfloor of - this consists of 6mm plywood sheets screwed down on top of large 18mm chipboard panels. Due to some water leakage from the old sink we need to replace some of the chipboards panels and I'm now wondering how best to go about this bearing in mind that the final finish will be an engineered wood. I think I have two options and would be grateful for advice as to which is the best approach: 1. Replace like for like - take up the damaged chipboard panels, replace and then replace damaged plywood panels before finally fitting the engineered wood floor. 2. take up all the plywood sheets, replace the damaged chipboard panels and fit the engineered floor directly on top of that. (or 3..... a method I haven't thought of)

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It depends on how bad the floor is. If it is just a small section that is damage, then you would replace the floor and renew all the ply in the room. Lastly, you would then fit the engineered flooring. Hope this helps

If it's a small area, you can replace like for like. If it was built in 2008 then the sizes should be standard and therefore easy to source. There is no need to replace the whole floor if it is localised to the sink area. Also, bear in mind the finished floor level. removing all the plywood will drop the whole floor 6mm.
