Tiles cracking, lifting on top of ply
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.41 PM
Need your help! We had our large kitchen dinner tiled with 60x60 tiles. The tiler instructed our joiner to put down ply. He took two days to tile a massive area. ^months in the tiles are completely lifting, cracking, sound hollow when walked on. Underneath the adhesive all combing still evident and adhesive bonded to ply but not the floor, no evidence of back buttering. Evidence of only 75 % coverage under some tiles. The tiler blames the ply and refuses to fix his substandard work. He said he used PVA then changed his story, He did not seal the boards and used Bal flexi adhesive. HELP !
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Tiling onto ply whilst was once acceptable is now frowned upon.
PVA should never be used as it emulsifies when it comes into contact with anything wet (adhesive)!
Firstly ply should be sealed with a diluted SBR seal then an anti fracture mat laid upon which Tiles can be laid using a proprietary flexible adhesive.
Quite simply your tiles haven't stuck due to the fact that moisture from the adhesive has been (sucked) absorbed into the wood before having time to cure and bond.

Totally agree with Gary Wade, the ply should of been primed with SBR and then a uncoupling matt should have been laid before tiling, the best one to use is Schluter ditra 25,if your tiler was a pro then he would of known this.
