New light switch / plug socket installation

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.21 PM

Hi Guys, I have just got a quick question regarding the installation of some new light switches and plug sockets which have been installed in new positions in several rooms of our house. Basically, the metal box enclosures for the socket have not been installed with the edges flush with the wall but deeper into the wall (in some instances ca. 20mm). When queried, I was advised that it was fine as when the walls are replastered, the long screws will allow the front plate to sit against the surface of the wall rather than sit deeper into the wall against the box. Can I just check this is okay? Is it fine to have a gap between the box exclosure and the actual front plate where the switch is? The reason why I ask is because when a previous rewire was undertaken the boxes were all pretty much flush against the wall with the plates pretty much touching them. Many thanks Gary

Not very good practice, but 20mm is not bad. I have seen them so deep you needed binoculars to see them. I wouldn't worry about it, but I guess some others on here will disagree with me.

As above better not to far back but likewise I've had to use 75mm socket screws in the past because boxes so far back so wouldn't worry too much about it.
