Best way to fit a false celling to a concrete celling

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

I have just bought my first flat it is a converted butchers (about 20 years ago) which has concrete ceilings. Almost all of the wiring is on the outside of the walls and ceiling, although some are chased in). I have had some plasters/electricians out to quote for having the wires chased in the walls and a false ceiling installed to hide the ceiling wires and also to create some noise and heat insulation. I have no idea what the best method of construction for the ceiling is. One builder wants to batten into the concrete but I am worried the insulation will not be that good and it that it might weaken the ceiling. Also would there not be a risk you might hit something in the concrete? The other wants to put in a complete floating ceiling but I am worried having read on the forum that this option will need some kind of support in the middle.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

HI There The floating ceiling option is best and if the span of timber is quite long then you can support in middle by using 15 mm threaded rod drilled into concrete and using resin fixing method so drill through timber into ceiling and once resin has set countersink larger hole in timber and bolt up as required. or use metal strapping band in middle drilled into ceiling Hope that helps

Hi just worked on a house with concrete ceiling we fixed lengths of 3x2 to it and then borded with plasterboard onto the new timber leaving a void for the electrics to be run in. Only problem is if you need to repair any of the cables in the future you will have to knock a hole in the ceiling for access.

There meney ways off making a false ceiling me personally would not use Timber on a concrete ceiling 1 the best option would be to use mf short fore metal frame and support with the relevant surport brackets the frame will not move and lose shape Also use 12.5mm blue plaster boards this will reduce noise from above Kind regards MINWORTH plastering solutions
