Hipped Roof - Is there a difference between an 'Arris Tile' and a 'Close-Mitred Tile'?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

Hi, Can someone tell me, is there is a difference between an Arris Tile and a Close-Mitred Tile on a hipped roof? When reading online information sources use different names but the pictures look the same. Also if the arris or close-mitred tiles kick out towards the top of a hipped roof, do I need to worry about water ingress? Thanks Stephen

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

a close mitred tile is just looks like an arriss tile cut in half down the middle.its not always possible to find arriss tiles to match roof pitch so close mitred tiles are cut instead.underneath join there will be a piece of lead called a soaker that protects roof from water ingress.

If they are close mitred and have no lead soaker underneath them then yes I would be worried about water ingress but if they are arris then you do not need to worry hope this has been useful.

Hi Stephen, Arris and close-mitred tiles are often used interchangeably, referring to tiles used on hipped roofs. Both have a similar appearance in pictures. If these tiles extend towards the top, ensure proper installation to prevent water ingress by using appropriate flashing and sealing methods. Best wishes, James - BritCare Roofing Solutions Limited.
