Builder wants us to pay to use their structural engineer for calcs and to appoint as build control
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.03 PM
We are doing a refurbishment involving taking out a load bearing wall. I know that we need to employ a structural engineer to do the works, and our builder has recommended we use they know for £675, but the builder has also said they would like to appoint the same person for build control at a cost to us of £700 + VAT. Does that sound right/normal process? My question is do we need to pay someone to do build control anyway? and is it normal for the same person who does the drawings to be the build control? Speedy replies would be appreciated as we are getting down to the wire on needing to get this done. Many thanks Alisa Thank you to ADR for their reply. I am advised that the structural engineer is also a planning officer, so by hiring him as building control he will also sign off the building regs and give us the document to say that it is all good that we would need should we decide to sell the house. just wondering if that sounds odd at all? Thank you
