Finish on MDF cupboards

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

hi I am planning on having MDF cabinets/cupboards made and am looking at options on how to paint or finish them off. from what I can tell you have to sand before doing anything then use a primer before painting, then paint and seal. with staining do I need to sand, use primer and then stain and seal and which products are the best and where from. As I have looked and watched videos but some say different to others. And which is the best option for a finish on MDF!!! Plus anything else I need to know!!! Thanks and all help welcomed .

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi If you want the MDF cabinet looked good on the visible edges I recommend nailed wooden slats (thin slats but with the same thickness as the plate and available in every store building.) Then you have to sanded and paint the primer, for MDF. I recommend paint Leyland Trade LEYLAND TRADE SATINWOOD PAINT BRILLIANT WHITE 2.5LTR I hope this answer will help you Kind Regards Kris

The easiest way to finish MDF edge is to seal it. The sealer can made from a mix of Primer paint, PVA and water. ratio of 10:5:1 or simply half pva and a drop of water to make the mixture move smoother with the brush. once 1 coat is dried sand back with a 120 grit sanding block. do another coat and sand again. do a white primer coat on the rest of the MDF. once thats done I would advise a water based spray finish and sand between each dry coat. i would not use stain as it may react with the chemicals in the MDF. Ive not tried it but the stain would add moisture and make the MDF split. I would also advise to use any cheap ply or OSB over MDF. as stain look good on Ply with a hard wax oil finish (Osmo Oil). MDF needs sealing and as very little moisture can make your new furniture look cheap and old very quickly.
