Striping old paint off banisters

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

My staircase banisters and spindles have been painted over again and again by previous owners (terribly-big drips everywhere) and I wanted to ask how best to approach striping them or whether it would be better to strip balustrade and handrail and replace spindles? Is this a job for me or should I get a professional in? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi I find the best way to do this is by burning off the old paint with a burner, do small bits at a time so you get everything as it starts to bubble start scraping off the old paint back to wood once this is all done give a rub over with some 120grit just to get last minor bits off and to smooth the wood Hope this helps, Chris Kingston

I would avoid burning off as it could be a very tedious / time consuming job. Firstly treat yourself to a little sander for detailed sanding, i.e. has a small triangular pad, as they are very good for removing those drips in sometimes awkward to reach places. I use a Ryobi multi-tool sander. Not cordless as those with re-chargeable battery packs are heavier to hold/work with.
