Installation of wired smoke detectors

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

Hi we have just had a first floor extension. The building inspector on his final inspection said we need to have wired smoke detectors on all floors, currently we have battery operated. Our builder is trying to charge extra for this and now saying that we won't get the certificate as we are refusing to pay for the additional work. I have several questions about this: i) can the smoke detectors be fitted by a qualified electrician or does it have to be someone registered ? ii) do we have to use the builders electrician who has done all the other electrical installation? iii) should we be issued with an Electrical Installation Certificate as well the Completion Certificate from the building inspector ? iv) Can we approach the building inspector directly to conclude this or do they only liaise with builders? Any help / advice would be much appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If that's what the building inspector says then just get them done. Interlinked also. The electrician who does the work issues the Electrical Installation Certificate. Or any other certificate electrical wise. I'm getting the smell of the builder using a spark that is not registered? Fully Qualified does not mean registered. As for asking for extra money to do it, have you had a quote for anything at any stage? If the electrician knew his stuff he would have known that you needed detectors from the outset. I have a feeling that he works for the builder and gets paid by him as well. But, you have to realise that someone has to pay for the detectors and it is your property.

any new installation has to be to building regulations and interlinked smoke detectors are part of that spec. you can obtain wireless interlinked smoke detectors, but still need source of electrical feed. like Deacon have stated qualified does not mean registered. And my understanding is that certificates and registering on niceic can not be delayed. if this is the case you can report them to niceic as the installation has not been done to regs if they have missed the smoke detectors.
