Bricklaying & Repointing

Mortar full of holes in 10 year old house

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

I have a 10 year old house to which I have a 3m length and 1m high area of brickwork (from the ground up) where the mortar has become full of holes as well as crumbly and I frequently find a fine layer of mortar dust on the floor. As the house is quite new this is a little baffling so I wonder if anyone has an idea of what could be causing it? It does seem to be spreading over time and hence I am keen to get some answers. The area is either side of a laundry room which also has a water softener with an outlet pipe which goes through this wall - might have no connection but thought I would mention it.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You will probably find that the house/wall part was probably built in the winter time are during a frosty cold day, the mortar wouldn't have set/hardened properly due to the cold weather and you will find it is crumbly and sandy if you scrape it with something, you would be better getting it Repointed , I hope you find this helpful 👍🏻
