Can a single plug wall socket in a kitchen be changed into a triple plug wall socket?

Yes you can. But as you can appreciate, with each plug top being capable of drawing 13 amps, you MUST make sure that the 1gang socket is on a ring main and is not a spur. Unless of course, the triple socket unit itself is fused down to 13amps across the three outlets.

Yes it can be. You can purchase adapters that are surface mounted or flush mounted. The labour for doing the job should be no more than doing a double socket outlet, the triple socket outlet however will be slightly more expensive to purchase in regards to materials.
