Removing load bearing wall - how wide should bearings be?
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.54 PM
We are having a livin' roof extension added to our house to extend our kitchen which involves knocking through a load bearing wall. The wall is 3900mm wide. The surveyor is saying the opening needs to be 3000mm with bearings each side of approx 450mm however we are wanting an open plan feel and this sounds very wide for the bearings. One side of the wall is the corner of the house so maybe that needs a wider support but is the 450mm necessary or could we have smaller? Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you

Hi, piers have to be a minimum of 150mm so 450mm sounds right for a corner bearing (300mm wall thickness plus 150mm pier) but the other side could be 150mm if it's not a corner. I will need to see the drawings though to give you an accurate answer. Regards, Steve
