noise control flooring terraced house ground floor

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.03 PM

Hi i have laminate floor fitted over a plank subfloor on ground floor with a pvc and a vitrex foamboard underlay underneath. It is very loud when my kids run over it and its causing problems with the next door neighbour who keeps banging. The floor was glued along the joints to keep it from coming apart with such a spongey underlay. If i decide to lift the laminate, whats the most quietest alternative other than carpet i could use. I have a very large thick shaggy rug over the floor at the minute but you can still really hear an echo of thuds when the kids are on that aswell so im not even sure changing the type of flooring will help. Is the problem the laminate or the actual subfloor which has a large ventilated gap beneath it? I dont want to put something different down if its going to make no difference. Does the floor need to be concreted first or something. Sorry for all the question's but i havent a clue

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Laminate is noisey there is not a lot you can do about it other than wearing soft shoes, the void will naturally amplify the sound of feet passing over it, so concrete would dampen the sound travel.

Hi, An appropriate sub straight attached to the floor boards prior to fitting the laminate will help but will not cancel the noise created by a laminate, a more dense underlay would also help. Kind regards SJH Group
