White Powder on beams in roof

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.21 PM

Hi My boyfriend and I have recently pulled down the ceiling on the top floor of our home, exposing the beams and tiles. This was done so insulation could be fitted as there wasn't any. Upon doing this, we noticed there were slight tears in the felt. The guys who fit the insulation informed us that this wouldn't be a problem as it would act as ventilation. Before fitting plasterboard and skimming, we have sanded the beams as we would like to leave them exposed. We have noticed a white residue on the corners of the beams which we believe to be a condensation deposit? I wondered if we would need to get this checked out before fitting the plasterboard? Thanks Bianca

It sounds like dry rot as white powdery growth is a clear indication of dry rot.It is common for this to occur and can sometimes be stopped by simply clearing it off the infected area and making sure there is better ventilation. A dry rot treatment may be advisable too. regards
