Tiling

Cracking wall tiles

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.03 PM

I had my bathroom fitted and walls and floor re-tiled about 2 years ago. About 1 year ago some tiles cracked in a corner. There had been an issue with damp on that wall as a drainpipe had been leaking onto it. However, my builder was very patient in waiting for wall to dry before tiling it. When my builder came out for a second time and replaced those tiles he said something about fixing the adhesive to allow for some movement in the walls and fortunately, these tiles have not cracked again. Now, I have cracks in the two corners above the bath, the wall opposing the wall with the original cracked tiles and a couple of tiles where the wall meets the floor. The floor tiles are all sound. My builder was a bit stroppy when I asked him to come out again. Does anyone have any idea of causes or solutions? Thanks Clare

If the tiles keep cracking then there is a problem with the walls. if the walls are ply then there could be movement with the ply, if they are plastered or plaster board there could be a damp issue.

did the builder use a flexible adhesive and grout?if not and there is move ment in the walls this will cause cracked tiles.you do not say if the walls are plaster/ply or something else that may cause movement.hope this helps identify it for you
