How can I tell if I have a leak

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.03 PM

Looking for advice/suggestions from a plumber - i live in a flat and my downstairs neighbour claims to have a leak on their bedroom ceiling. They are very difficult to get a hold of so I havent been able to see anydamage for myself but is there anyway I would know if I had a leak?? There has been no change to my water pressure at all and I still have a water tank in the cupboard so been listening to that to see if it constantly fills. Once the taps are off it fills then it stops which seems normal to me (i would have expected it to continue to fill). Ive checked the seals around the shower etc and all appear fine. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Until you see it or feel it or maybe hear it it's hard to say. There is a chance of little drip from pipework that may build up over time and produce stains on your downstairs neighbour's ceiling. I've seen bath overflow not connected properly and when bath was taken water was dripping on a floor. When complaint from downstair neighbour was made few days later there was no sign of a leak. Just some stain on the floor.

Possibly a waste pipe e.g, when. You run a sink ? Use wash machine, this could beat fault. possibly a tap wSher leaking or wc overflow or tank overflow

You will have 3 circuits in the house. 1) cold and hot water 2) central heating. 3) drains. They all can be tested separately. Sometimes you could get leaks from the defective shower screen, or from cracks into the grout, Good luck Tiziano

If possible look at the location of the neighbours stain. Then you will be able to establish roughly where above it is coming from. At the minimum you'd be able to find what it's coming from IE bath, sink, toilet, shower etc. Then a bit of further investigation should show if it's a pipe leak, fitting malfunction or bad installation.
