Do I have to use an oil based primer/undercoat under gloss paint?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

hi, if its new woodwork then you willneed to use a primer and undercoat (water or oil based).
If your glossing over existing woodwork that already has a coat on then dulux do a one coat gloss (oil based) which is self undercoating.
You can use waterbased primers/undercoats under gloss yes.

Hi,Like other tradesman said new wood needs primer undercoat but in your case the old oil base will just require proper sanding and paint again in oil base.
I would suggest primer undercoat on painted surface in case:
1)The wood has major damage which requires a lot of filler patches primer undercoat will help speed up the process of covering and sometimes comes cheaper.
2:) If the wood color has changed a lot from the original color one like to dirty to cover with 1 or 2 coats, benefits drying time and sometimes cheaper.
Hope that helps.
All the best

The timber should be slightly sanded, cleaned with a damp cloth and then before applying the top coat should apply a couple of layers of wood primer.Wood primer is used on natural wood. It becomes the basis for the top layer. Since it is diluted with water, it can be applied by brush, roller and airless spray gun.If wood or wood products are in good condition, they will probably be enough to clean with warm water and soap. If wood or wood is slightly damaged, for example, there are recesses and holes, they can apply wood putty and slightly sanded and painted with undercout, gloss.
