Plastering & Rendering

Inadvisable to paint wall first if skim-plastering it later on?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

I'm slowly renovating a house while living in it at the same time. The living room is currently stripped back to the original plaster (100 years old). I will probably be fully renovating the room in about 2 years. Until then I'd ideally like to just white-wash it so that it looks livable. My concern is that it may cause problems when I get the walls skimmed in year or two. Does that mean that the only thing holding the new plaster to the wall is the paint, and therefore the bonding to the original wall will only be as strong as the paint layer underneath? Please let me know whether it's safe to do a quick paint job or if I should leave unpainted. Thanks in advance.

Plasterers always (hopefully!) use a bonding agent prior to application so you need not worry really assuming it IS just a quick white wash. Even though commonly used for external application we always use SBR, (rather than the cheaper Unibond pva) as a bonding agent and that always does the job over most surfaces when a skim coat is required. Having said all that I would save the cost of paint and all the time painting and hang off until you can afford the plastering! Just saying ;)
