Extension - RSJ length (High Wycombe, Bucks)
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.03 PM
Hi Want to have a rear extension done this year - one question is how long the RSJ can be. House is detached and 11.33 metres wide when measured corner to corner on exterior wall (back garden side). With new rear extension in would like to reconfigure and open up as much as possible of this house as possible. So how long can the RSJ be and therefore how long can the opening be? Also, how much of the original wall has to remain on each side for the padstone/RSJ to sit on? Cheers

Hi Tony
As you have now probably worked out, only by spending some money on a structural engineer will this be answered with any detail.
Certain designs eg a goal post steel structure can maximise the width but in real terms a visit by your local SE is your first phone call AND cost …probably £300 to £400 for that one detail. …. or you can bite the bullet and just get the architect in to include this with his design of course.

The only way to be sure is to have a structural engineer measure the opening and calculate the size of the steel needed. but if you want a quick rule of thumb then measure span and divide by 20 for the depth of beam ie S/20 = Depth. span =3m 3/20 = 0.15m or 150mm. for heavy loaded divide by 18, 3/18 = 0.17m. cantilever S/7 = depth, truss S/14 = D. remember that you have to get a structural engineer for the calculations this is just a guide to assist you in pricing materials for jobs.
