Re-laying a patio - full mortar bed on top of sand

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

I'm re-laying a patio, which already has seems to have a sub-grade, some landscaping material and a sub layer. The current flags are laid on top of a screed bed of sand (few inches). I'm going to lay the new stuff on a full mortar bed 40-50mm. Is there any reason I can't remove some of the current sand, get the levels for drainage, re compact and then lay the mortar bed on top of this? Possibly wet the sand to stop it drawing the moisture from the mortar mix? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

the way you have described how you intend to do the job is the way I would have done the work myself and the sand that would be taken off I would use in the new mix to save money as long as there are no big lumps in it. just be aware were the damp course is on the house as it would be best to be at least one brick below the damp course

The first item to consider is the proximity to a building like a house as you do not want to compromise the damp proofing - laying 40 - 50mm may put your final flag level above this layer. Secondly are you aware of any services such as electrical that may be shallow buried under this area. We would remove the sand to hard core level and then mortar to achieve levels and drainage - we hope this helps.
