Removal of gas fire

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.39 PM

I am in a rented property and the gas fire has been condemned and disconnected. The Landlord had agreed to replace the fire if we took the tenancy - but has now renaged on this! It's so ugly and old - with a huge 'do not use' sign! We were thinking of taking it out ourselves and replacing with a plug in electric fire, or freestanding stove. Question is, what do I do (safely) with regards to the hole left at the back of the fire when it's removed?? Can I just get a panel to secure to the wall and stand an electric stove fire in front of it? If I sound naive, please be kind with responses! I'm asking as I have no knowledge at all in this area, and the estate agent and landlord are worse than useless! Thank you.

Good Morning. Sounds like your landlords a great help! In short the answer is yes, if the gas fire has definitely been disconnected and capped off at the gas supply. Do not attempted to pull it out unless you are sure. If in doubt, get it checked out first. If you do decide to remove it, you will want to put plenty of protection down on the floor as the chances are it will be filthy behind there! Hope this help, Steve
