Earth wire in wall light, not linked directly to wall?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.39 PM

Have bought a new wall light to replace an old one. Took the old one off the wall but am confused by the wiring. There is only a live and neutral wire coming out of the wall (very old house). These have been attached to a terminal box then from the same terminal box are a further live, neutral and an earth wire which attach to the old wall light fitting. My question is, is this earth wire actually doing its job, is it safe? As there isn't actually an earth wire directly linking the light fitting with the wall, the earth wire only goes from the fitting to a terminal box, which is linked to the wall by the live and neutral wires coming out of the wall. Hopefully this makes some sense, hard to explain without pics!

You have 2 core wiring on the lighting circuit(s). Common in older properties. You have no earth to attach to the new, I assume, metal fitting. So please don't just put the new one up, consult a registered electrician, there are guidelines what type of fittings and switches etc that can be installed on this type of installation. Hope also you have RCD protection in the consumer unit? The electrician might just say it needs rewiring, but there are ways around that.
