Painting a newly rendered garden wall. Where do I start?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.03 PM
We have just had a 25m long x 1m high wall rendered in our garden and I will be painting it, but have a few questions. 1. How long should I leave it to dry? At the moment the weather is dry most days with just the occasional shower. 2. Any advice on where I start with buying and then applying the paint? Is there any particular paints I should buy or avoid, how many coats, do I need to use a primer? Thanks *UPDATE* Thanks for your answer, really helpful. Can I clarify, are you suggetsing 90% paint, 10% water (not the other way round!)? And any advice on what brand or type of paint to buy?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Treat new render in much the same way as you would treat new plaster. Make sure that the render is fully dry, best not to paint it until at least 3 weeks to three months has passed all dependant on weather conditions, coming into summer time and dry weather usually 3 weeks I'd fine. It should dry lighter then once all the same colour it should be ready. Using the same paint throughout the whole system (do not be tempted to compromise the integrity of a good quality product by introducing an inferior one, especially the priming coat) thin the first coat between 10% to a maximum of 20%. If you find it necessary to thin the subsequent coats do not exceed 10%.
