Skim over nicotine - painting
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.39 PM
Hi I've just had my artex ceiling skimmed over, the previous owner was a smoker so there was nicotine staining. Everywhere else in the house we have cleaned with sugar soap, sanded the walls and painted with zinsser bin. Does anyone have any advice on whether we should be painting the new plaster with bin or will it be okay to go straight to emulsion? Thanks

I would always do the mist coat on any new plaster first, then see if the staining comes back through which i would be surprised but you never know.
Plaster is a couple mm thick so its not the same surface as previous so should be ok.
Good luck.

If the nicotine stain is not bleeding through the plaster, there's no need/benefit of sealing it. You will need to mist coat it first coat as usual with new plaster.

Recommend mist coating it first when plastering. I don't think the nicotine would stain through, but check after when you have done mist coating.

I would mist coat it first and then you might find the stains may come through, if so then put zinsser on the ceiling
