Wiring for cooker switch
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.39 PM
My cooker doesnt work I have installed a 40A switch for it but only the L conductor goes through the switch no the neutral in the double pole. Could be this the cause?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello
I understand it to be a 45 amp double pole switch which is the right one to use. Both live and neutral should go through it to isolate the supply if needed hence (double pole). I would first check the connections in the switch for polarity (crossed wires), and make sure there is power going to the cooker. If these are good, the cooker may have a fault but that switch does not sound good.

No idea. Don't really understand what the question is tbh. If you had left it to a professional to install it all this could have been avoided. If you don't know how it's supposed to work and don't know how to explain it correctly, what chance do we stand. My advice, get a registered person in to fix it, with all due respect.

As Deacon says! Thank goodness for B&Q, Screwfix etc, it's opened a whole new world to the unsure! If you don't know what you are doing then find somebody who does for your own safety, please!

Hi,
It sounds like you are going to attempt this yourself. Two questions from me, how are you to test the connection and how are you to interpret the results?
The problem is that when you eventually see it working, that is, the lights come on or the cooker heats up, or that it has always "worked", you will think it has been wired correctly and is therefore safe. Huge mistake, never ever assume just because it works, it is safe. The answer is to PROVE it is safe, if you can't get someone who can.
