Re : Wiring of Satellite
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.20 PM
Couple of years ago I did a complete renovation of the house including the wiring. I did the wiring of the satellites connection in each room ,total 7 and the connection ends are now in loft without labelling of which wire is for which room. How would I check from the loft which of the 7 wires belong to which room .Any expert help will be highly appreciated. Many thanks Cass

Hi,
The way I would do it would be to first put masking tape or gaffer tape on each of the 7 cables in the loft (so when they are identified all you have to do is write on it with a marker to save time). Then go and pick on the first room and join the wires in the cable together (if it's 'shot-gun' type) with a block connector, then get back into the loft and work your way through the spaghetti of cables using a meter or tester on 'Continuity' setting. When you reach the cable that has the wires joined together it will (depending on the meter/tester) buzz. Work your way through all the other rooms doing the same one at a time. Don't join them up all in one go to save going up and down the loft ladder as your going to be back at square one as they will all show continuity! Hope that this makes sense. You can always google continuity check to see a vid or other description if unsure.

A tone generator is your best option. One part is a generator with 2 croc clips, the other is a probe that picks up the signal from the generator. Strip the coax in 1 room, separate the inner core from the copper braid, put 1 clip on the braid and 1 on the inner core, go in to the attic with your probe and it will make a specific sound when you touch the other end of the cable you are connected to. Very simple and straight forward procedure, 10 minutes should do it.
Hope this helps
