Garden Tap Check Valve

I'm installing a new garden tap and understand that I need to fit a double check valve in the water supply (within the house) to avoid the valve freezing in winter. Does this mean that having fitted the valve inside the house I then need to use a tap that DOESN'T contain a check valve within it? Will I have problems if use a tap with a check valve in it and it then freezes in winter?

The check valve is used to prevent a back flow of water re entering the mains system (as per Water Regs), not to prevent freezing. Check valves are prone to frost damage, so you've don't the right thing fitting it inside the property. As long as you've got a double check valve on the pipe work leading from the mains supply to the outside tap, you're fine.

You can get outside tap kits with a built in check valve . They prevent back siphonage not water freezing. For example some people may have a hose attached to it and they leave it in a bucket, that water in the bucket could siphon up the hose and into your water supply.... Double check valves prevent that. To stop the water freezing you can lag the pipe and also, once a week give the water a little blast during the winter.

Double check valves are a protection in case of negative water pressure. I.e. If you been filling up your paddling pool then leave your hose in it, if a negative water pressure occurs in your hose or road without double check valve the water from the paddling pool would be sucked back into the system.without you knowing. Then you fill your kettle and drink your tea. Lagging pipes is best protection against frost.

The check valve is to prevent back flow into the mains, to help against Pipework freezing you'll need insulation(usually found on pipes in cold cellars, outdoor Pipework etc)
