Orange powder/ dust from inside gas meter anaconda pipe

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

Hi I was clearing out an old gas meter which had been removed by builders years ago and left in my shed. I unscrewed the anaconda regulator pipe which was still attached and noticed I was covered in orange dust! Got me worried as not sure whether it was rust or some toxic byproduct! Washed my hands quickly but what if it was inhaled?? The meter is a U6 Schlumberger and it had a larger than normal regulator on it which says 'filtered' on it. Further powder came out when I tapped the pipe against wall with filtered regulator still attached Any advice please as to what it was. Thanks Baz

Hello, As a gas safe engineer I have carried out plenty of work involving testing or capping off gas meters but not come across anything that would resemble orange dust or powder. I was interested though to find out a bit more as it is an old gas meter that is not so common. I spoke to gas safe and the meter manufacturer and put the question to them. They both confirmed that there was no powder or dust used inside the meters and it was more than likely to be just rust. Hope this puts your mind at rest. Regards, Steve
