2ND STOREY EXTENSION BUILT ON STEEL GIRDER
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.39 PM
We are building a second storey extension on a steel frame. We have been told that because the girder is narrower than the width of the cavity wall being built on top of it that a steel plate will have to be welded to the top of the girder to give it extra width for the cavity wall to be built on top of it. The steel size is 203mm and the cavity wall is 300mm. Is this information about the steel plate correct. If it is how thick would the steel plate need to be to take the weight of the second storey.

This is a matter you would need to discuss with a structural engineer, as this is something you do not want to get wrong, as it can put lives at risk. You can call a structural engineer who can do the calculations and tell you exactly what you need. Best to be safe!
