Damp Proofing

We have very bad damp coming through on some walls in the kitchen which has totally ruined the plaster and we are not sure what the cause is.

Somebody has said that it may be water penetrating the bricks as when you knock them with a hammer they make a different noise in different places. Can anybody tell me if this is right or are they trying it on. If it is right what should we do about it. Any help gratefully received.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Get a damp proofing company out, they will need to look at it, and will advise what needs doing.

the bricks may well be pourus and taking in water especially if they are old you need to find out where the water or the dampness is coming from once fixed you should get it dried out with a de humidifier and definetly then have it plastered with renovating plaster this will help to stop dampness

My advice would be to get a Damp-Proofing specialist in and get a second opinion on the advice you've already had. Carl.

I'll echo the advice of folks above about getting a damp specialist in to investigate as there could be a number of reasons & you don't want to waste time or money solving the wrong one. Worth looking on the outside near where the damp spots are to see if it's not a damaged gutter/rain/waste pipe. Check for wet areas of brickwork, damaged mortar &/or signs of moss. Hope that helps!
