Gas Works

Doing Gas work outside of company

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.02 PM

My landlord had his boiler replaced by a company recently. While they were doing the work on his property the engineer said that he could replace the boiler in this rental property, where I live, for less than he had been quoted from other companies. He came out today to do the quote, basically he works through the week for a company and does his own work at the weekend however he operates under his companies Gas safe number and not his own. If he was to install a new boiler would this invalidate the warranty? Can he legally work like this? would he be insured? When I mentioned that the new installed needed to be notified he implied that would cost extra as if it was not something he was going to do, which has made me suspicious but I have checked the Gas safe site and he is there under his company with both domestic and commercial qualifications. Update: Thanks for the answers, He specifically said he did not have his own Gas safe registration and only had his companies one.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Depend on the engineers parent company , it is not uncommon for engineers to have their own Gassafe registration allowing them to work on the side. I have personally heard of this many times. If you have any doubiety call Gassafe and ask the question .

As stated by Handsgas Ltd. I too work for a company using there own Gas Safe registration number, but when I carry out my own private works I use my own Gas Safe registration, paid for by me. So not an uncommon practise within the industry, and concur with the first post reply. Perfectly legal, but if in doubt as advised, ask to see his own Gas Safe I.D card, make and note of his registration number plus license number too contained on the card then telephone Gas Safe for confirmation!

Plus he has to register any heat producing appliance within 30 days whether he likes it or not. I wouldn't use an engineer who questioned doing that- what other corners will they cut?
