strong enough foundations? Double on top of single

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.02 PM

Our property already has a single storey extension (built in 1981), we have a copy of the plans and they say that the foundations are 1metre deep with a concrete footing of 300mm x 600mm - Is this strong enough to build a double storey on top? Also who do we contact to carry out a dig test to confirm this?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. If the original single story extension was constructed to current building regulations and from what you have said there should not be a problem. The foundations for a single story extension are the same as a double story extension. As it has been some time since the original building has been constructed the building inspector will probably ask the builder to dig a couple of inspection pits to the side of the existing foundation to confirm its suitability for the proposed building. If it's been constructed as per building regs and as per original design, there should not be a problem. Steve. West Mid SPD Construction

Hi, you need a structural engineer to sort this out for you, they make all the calculations and do tests etc. Your architect should be able to recommend one, or Google it for local companies. Just be sure they are suitably qualified. You will have to do this for building regs drawings anyway, Cheers, Martin
