Installing paving slab on step face

Hello, I've been installing a new patio in my front courtyard. I've laid 30mm black limestone paving slabs across the whole area on a bed of cement and sharp sand (6:1 ratio) and pointed with mortar (3:1 ratio). I was planning to re-paint the concrete step that is raised about 5 inches off of the courtyard and constitutes the front porch. I've decided that the step would be better if I laid the same paving on it. However, I'm not sure what to do about the vertical 'face' of the step. How can I attach a thin paving slab to that step? Can I support it underneath and affix it with mortar (3:1 ratio or similar)? I plan to run the facing slab about 3 inches up the step (from the top of the new paving) and overhang paving above to finish the step. Any advice would be appreciated. Regards, Martyn

Hi, you can keep the brickwork and remove the slab from the top of the step, use a mix of 2:1 sand and cement with no plasticiser for the upstands and fix onto the brickwork if your mix is right you wont need to support it, it will hold itself. If the step is hollow add limestone base and a 30mm sand blind flush with the top of the brickwork to support the slab.

I’ve done a few steps I normally use concrete blocks to build the step then make a mix of just cement and water till it turns to paste so you can apply to back of the cut limestone to fit your step. Cut your riser first then apply paste to back of the riser and place against concrete step and knock down to the level.finish off with bedding limestone slab on top overhanging the riser. Hope this helps
