Problems painting a metal gate with Hammerite rust to metal

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.02 PM

Hi, I bought a tin of Hammerite rust to metal to paint my side gate. I followed all of the preparation instructions on the tin, wire brush, sand, wash with detergent and rinse with clean water but when I started to apply the paint it's like trying to mix oil and water, the paint will only stick to the gate in a few places such as the hinges and the latch. I didn't sand the gate right back to the bare metal as there's about 6 layers of various coloured paint but I removed any loose paint and gave it a good rub down. The only thing I can think of is that the gate may be galvanised but how can I tell and would this prevent the paint from adhering? Thanks in advance. Thanks for the replies, I washed the gate the previous day and started painting it at 1 pm the next day which was warm and sunny so I'm certain the gate was dry. Would it be better to strip the paint back to bare metal and start again?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Did you let gate properly dry sounds like you have a moisture problem ? Also if your really having problems I would prime it as this will be a lot quicker than back to bare metal and allot less fuss ,also just too mention that metal gates can hide pockets of water in places so it's best too look at gate in all corners any where water can hide hope this saves you stripping it back as is messy and if it's lead based paint watch out for your lungs any way good luck .

Reply 1; Like Jason said you must let the gate fully dry as you cannot paint an oil based paint over a wet surface, if the gate was dry then the paint might be reacting with the original paint that was on there before. I would hazard a guess that the gate was probably still wet, try again on a hot sunny day when the metal can get warm and dry properly. Please let me know if this helps. reply2; How was the Hammerite paint when you opened the tin? Did you add any white spirit to the paint as this would also not mix well with the paint, I am wondering if there was something wrong with the paint, or maybe the Hammerite just reacted with what it was painted with earlier. Best advice at the moment would be to call the Hammerite help line and see what they suggest the number should be on the side of the tin. Good luck.

This can also happen if the hinges have been greased or sprayed with WD40. Soapy water might not have removed all the residue. Use white spirit with a stiff brush to clean these problem areas. The new formula hammer can be thinned with white spirit as apposed to cellulose thinners as it used to be. Hope that helps!

Hi spongebob_70 Not a fan of Hammerite. They tried to cut down on the solvent content sometime ago and ruined there product in the process. Best paint for recovering corroded steel is a paint product called 'Coovar'. Readily available on line. Not cheap but brilliant for covering corroded steel. Hope this helps. Martin
