best way to paint dark wood doors how many undercoats, and the best finish for top coat

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

I am painting my new flat myself, I want to know what paint to use be it gloss or satin as I am painting dark wood flat doors in the hall way there is no daylight so need a light colour in the past I have found white oil base gloss goes yellow quickly, I have so far washed rubbed down and put one coat of primer do i need to do 2 coats of primer. I want to do them light cream to lighten the hall as much as possible how long do i need to leave between coats so no chipps when replacing handles, please advise

I normally use water based primer undercoat, as it is dark wood apply 2/3 coats for the added protection plus you have a solid white base to put your top coat on. Always ensure coats are dry before recoating. Satin or Eggshell has less sheen than Gloss which has a high sheen finish.

Are yhe doors in woodstain or varnish if so only use a oil based primer or alluminium primer water based primers will pull the staining through.
