Old bricks and stone at bottom of footing trench
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.20 PM
My friend is doing a house extension. Part of the house was demolished. The builders digged footing trench, then put some of the old bricks and stones into the bottom of the trench. The concrete was poured on top of those bricks and stones. Is this a normal practice? Will the old bricks causes any cracks in the concrete? As the concrete was not poured on solid soil, will there be any movement later?

This is an old practise one that most builders will not do. I doubt they will be any failure, the building inspector from the LA would have past the foundation trench as acceptable and once filled with mass concrete the foundation should be sound. Ask the builder to warranty all the works.

I would not advise this you would always want a solid concrete base
