Cracks in ceiling

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.38 PM

Hi, In my lounge and diner, the ceiling has numerous cracks. Previous owner has filled the cracks and put lining paper to cover. I have just ripped the lining papers and can see that cracks needs some repair. There is coving here and the edge of the coving is very thin - ~5 mm. On some places the coving edge is just 2-3 mm. The ceiling is very solid and I can not hear any hollow spaces when I knock on it. What options do I have to fix the ceiling? I thought of below options: 1. Remove coving. Remove ceiling. put plaster board and skim over. Put new coving. I am agaist this option as it is expensive, more messy. I am living in the property at the moment and will live during repair too so want to avoid messy fix. 2. Put long nails in the ceiling and seal it to joist. Plaster board and skim over the existing ceiling. I am against this option as I will lose edge of the coving with this option and coving will look very bad. 3. Just put mash over crack and skim over. Even with this option I will lose edges of the coving. 4. Just repair the cracks and put lining paper. I am tending to believe that the previous owner have chose this option due to its merit. Though it does not look as good as normal paint job but I guess I need to make trade off here. What others this on MyBuilder? Is there any other option I am missing here which may be more suitable for me. My wife is pregnant at the moment and I want to avoid any messy solution but if that's the only option left then I guess I may have to go with that. Please share your opinion. Thanks.

Your best bet if it's cracks in the ceiling is to put new plasterboards and skim, because if you fill in the crack and put lining paper you will have the same issue a few years on, when the ceiling starts cracking it means your plaster needs redoing as if you don't it will lead to more cracks so long term this is the best solution I hope this helps

The cleanest way and cheapest to way to solve this problem is to: Replaster ceiling, but bed some fibre glass rendering mesh over the cracks before you plaster the ceiling, its like scrim but a lot stronger and thicker, you can buy smaller rolls from b&q, As for the coving you may be better off changing it , if you've only 2/3 mm you will lose the profile on one side , coving isn't that messy and will be a much better job ,
