should my builder have levelled our floor before tiling starts.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.38 PM

we have had a complete refurbishment of our house. The downstairs living kitchen and dining area is now open plan and we chose to put tiles on the whole area which is quite large. We have chosen under floor heating but when we look at the area now there are quite afew different levels as they were previously different rooms with different floor coverings. The builder is rushing now as we are supposed to be moving back in soon. He has not levelled any of the floor and has told the tiler to start laying the tiles so he can get the kitchen in. The tiler has told us he is very concerned for how it will be in the long run as they have told him to use the tile adhesive to level the floor as he goes. He has said the floor needs 2mm od adhesive in some places and up to 20mm in others. We are very worried as the builder has gone on holiday and this is happening in his absence. The rooms are not fully emptied of building stuff so the tiler cannot see the rest of the floor which is supposed to be all the same. Can tile adhesive be used in this way or should the builder have put screed or some such down first. Thanks.

Hi. Your builder should DEFINITLY make floor leveled. Tile glue cannot be used for it. Regards.

Sub-Floors should be levelled 100% with a screed/latex before tiles go down by the builder or tiler. The tiler aware of the problem shouldn't be laying tiles an using adhesive to make it level if he knows there's a problem in doing so..
