Lath and plaster lining paper

Hi. We've just bought an edwardian house and the lath and plaster ceilings have a few hairline cracks but also some loose lining paper, or visible edges in some areas. Guess the lining paper was put up to maintain the l&p but is getting old now. How do you best cover the cracks and lining paper edges? We have lovely cornicing so don't want to over board. Thanks Steven

Hi Steven. An option would be to carefully trim around the cornice to remove the lathe and plaster ceiling and then double board the ceiling to bring it back to the right depth before plastering. In my opinion this would give you the best finish without having to remove the cornice.

you could trim around the coving and reboard and plaster when re fixed , another option would be to remove loose paper fill the old pieces removed and then use a good fibrerock wallper if looking for cheaper option the only problem with this is the old wallpaper underneath could bubble when wet paint , paste is applied , ideally remove the old ceiling hope this helps
