Removal of hanging tiles
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.38 PM
Hi, we have a home with horrid hanging tiles to the front of house. We'd like to remove them and render instead, however, they are on battons and the block work is set back a bit from the window frames. Can we remove the tiles, battons and render with an outside insulation board? is this possible? approx 10sq meters ish. Thanks be interested to hear from people that can do this job too!

It depends on the age of the house. If it is post WW2, the suggestion above is absolutely spot on. If it was built before WW2, it will have been constructed using lime mortar, which is porous. Any insulation you add should also be porous (there are plenty available which are) and rendered using hydraulic lime - not Portland cement (even with lime added). This would seal the wall, prevent the natural evaporation of moisture from the wall, and could well result in a damp wall.
