Should l be concerned with my lintel?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.38 PM
I have recently moved into a terraced house and the lounge and diner has been made into one large room. It's a big span (approx 3 metres) and lm nervous of how little the concrete lintel is sitting on one side (80mm) and the other side is the party wall and l can't tell how much it's going into the brick work. No building regs were supplied when l bought the property. Should l take action to prop either end of the lintel? I'm going to be adding a loft extension and lm concerned with adding additional weight to this area. Thanks

Any lintel expansion should sit on at least 150 mm each side according to Building Regs, i would definitely reinforce, hope this helps.

I would get a engineer in to have a look if I had done the work I would have put steel in and you should have a minimum of 150mm baring onto the wall 80mm is not enough

I agree with the other 2 answers - get it checked out. From the sounds of it you need a steel in there.
