Timber Beam that runs behind skirting is loose and falling away.
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.02 PM
Hi, I am currently restoring a 1950 semi. Stripped wallpaper, removed carpet etc. Now tackling the skirting board but encountered a problem. The skirting is nailed to a beam of wood that runs the length of the wall but is very loose and is coming away with the skirting. It is pretty old timber and the plaster around this beam is falling away easily too. Any one able to help with some advice on how to secure this beam properly again or if it needs to be replaced? If so how is it attached to be solid so the new skirting will be solid as well once screwed in? Thanks for your help. Sanfico

Plumb the wall (as in test the surface of the wall to determine the vertical) and if it's all nice and plumb and level you don't really need to fix it to battens, solvent based grip fill to a dust free surface would do the job just as good as any other mechanical fixing.
let us know how you get on.

You will need to replace the timber and you secure it with a bed of pug wedges then you use a 4:1 mix of sand and cement and fill the remaining gap at the top wait until it goes off then you can fix your skirting
