do i need a new consumer unit?

the current unit in the house looks very old. the individual bits are held together by a plastic surround and houses a 5amp or 13amp fuse. add the fact that there have been a couple of different extensions onto the house and all the wiring is all over the place. so if i take out a fuse some of the newer lights downstairs go of but others stay on, and the boiler turns off as well. i will try to post a picture as well

The first step would be to carry out a condition report on the installation. This would highlight any defects and safety concerns visually but also the integrity of the circuits in terms of checking for continuity(that there are no issues with the earthing of final circuits but also that the cables insulation is still within their service life. Post testing the report will determine if a new consumer unit is required but more importantly if the associated circuits also need replacing. As a whole it is sometimes more cost effective in the long run to consider a full rewire to bring everything up to current regs if multiple circuits are giving failed results.

I would recommend a test on the installation first that will highlight any problems and then change your board to a modern one thanks Hope this helps SPM ELECTRICAL
