foghorn noise when using hot water
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.31 PM
Whenever we turn hot water taps on for a length of time (i.e. running bath) a loud foghorn noise starts up (we call it the Queen Mary coming in!). We can counter this by turning on the cold water tap of the bath and also the sink cold water tap. I have adjusted the pressure slightly at mains stopcock but this doesnt help. The only thing that gets rid of noise is by turning other cold water taps on until I suppose the hot water cylinder is full again. Any advice?

Is the water fed from a tank,if so could the noise be coming from the "Ball valve" in the tank ?

Hi, You will probably find that you have a water pipe that needs to be clipped/secured. Unsecured pipes can vibrate. They are not always easy to find but you may be able to if you turn the water on and try and hold pipes where you can find them. You should feel a vibration. If so then thats the pipe that needs to be clipped down.
Other than that a plumber should be able to find it.
Hope this helps.

More than likely both, but a very common problem with part 2 ballvalves which often starts off when the water temp get colder in the winter. The rubber gets harder & so less flexible & thus you get a whine or hammer. This will highlight any loose mains pipe making it sound like a steam train ploughing through the house. Get it fixed but it sounds much worse than it is.

"Water hammer" usually a faulty tap valve or diaphram in a ballcock.
As mentioned it could also be unsecured pipework but more likely a valve.
