Old Bakelite light switch broken. Can it be made safe to use with a modern switch?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.19 PM
My dads house is in need of rewiring. It was partially done a few years back but some light switches upstairs are still the original Bakelite ones. 2 are cracked and insides exposed so not safe to use. I will be getting a rewire done once probate sorted and finances put in place but in the meantime, can the broken sockets be made 'safe' to use with modern socket replacements?

Yes replacing the bakelite switches is fine and perfectly safe. Just make sure you isolate/turn the power off if you are going to attempt this yourself.

If you've the old baker light switches has the wiring got rubber insulation? If so its got to replaced. If you change the switch you will also have to change the back box. As with any electrical job make sure the power is off.
