Skylights and opening up loft space

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.02 PM

Our kitchen in our bungalow is quite dark and I'd love to open up the loft space but not necessarily take out the trusses. Imagine just talking out half of the ceiling and putting skylights into the opened up space. I have literally no idea how much this would cost with insulating and finishing the roofspace on the vertical wall that would be created, then insulating and finishing the sky lighted roof. The space would be approx 4.5m long and maybe taking 2m of the ceiling out and putting 3 skylights in. I'm just after advice if this is even a good idea or if it would be too problematic.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

1. Trusses are a modern design feature, fabricated at low cost in workshop facilities and dont afford a great deal of alteration. loft hatches can be accommodated without too much difficulty, even natural light "tunnels", but a 4.5m span demands a more sophisticated approach to structural support. 2. Anything is possible, the restrictions are economically based. 3. The project involves joinery, roofing, plastering, and decorating. 4. I think its a great idea 5. First port of call, choose rooflights/velux hope that helps Kind regards Peter SBS Joinery and Property Maintenence

Here is an option that does not involve changing/removing your roof trusses. VELUX Sun Tunnels for pitched roofs are designed to provide natural light into corridors, stairwells, bathrooms and cupboards, under pitched roofs, where installation of a Velux roof window is not possible. The Velux flex tunnels and rigid tunnels provide installation flexibility. Flex tunnels can be used when the distance between the roof and the ceiling is too small for a rigid tunnel. Rigid tunnels deliver a straight shaft of light for when the ceiling is placed directly under the exterior window in the roof.
