Chimney breast already removal in upstairs bathroom - Help

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

I hope someone can help. Sometime ago we had a chimney breast removed by a builder in our upstairs bathroom. When he took the chimney breast out he took everything out from the bathroom and all of the brickwork which leads into the loft. A few years on I am a bit concerned that the chimney bit which sits on the roof should have also been removed. Any advice appreciated. A building regs application was submitted we were told to put a steel support in but the builder did it this was and said it was ok and that a steel wasnt required.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Shamus, if a building regulations application was submitted you should have been given a completion certificate at the end of the project, if you have one chances are it will be ok as the building control officer should have inspected the support (should have!). You could always ask building control to come back out and have a look, you paid them a fee so you are their client after all. Other than that the only way to be sure would be to get a structural engineer to have a look, I would not rely on the builder to be honest.
